Rio Nero, located on the northern side of the Musi mountain range, is surely one of the most beautiful glacial valleys. It is also one of the best preserved areas in the Julian Prealps.
Much of the trail which climbs the valley winds along the walls hollowed out by the course of the Rio Nero, a tributary of the Resia river, showing the hiker the combined action of ice and water.

In the hollow of an age-old glacial cirque, today covered by dense woods, stands the Rio Nero refuge (865 m). Used as a shepherd’s hut until the early 1960s, forty or so cows and as many goats were grazed in the surrounding pastures. Following the 1976 earthquake, the hut was rebuilt as a refuge for hikers, equipped with kitchen facilities and about 15 beds. By using this excellent base, it is possible to make the ascent to Mount Cuzzer (CAI trail no. 707), Mount Lavara (CAI trail no.703 and 726) and Mount Cadin (CAI trail no. 703 and 740).
