The building stands at the foot of the Canin Massif and is one of the oldest refuges in Resia Valley. Casera Coot (from Kot, the original Resian place-name which means “corner” in Slovene dialect) is situated in approximately 40 hectares of pasture which extend over an area at between 1,100 and 1,800 metres in altitude and which have recently been restored after years of neglect. The restoration of the refuge forms part of an extensive and innovative livestock and environmental restoration project, which includes the conservation of certain native bovine and ovine breeds otherwise destined for extinction.
The refuge, which provides an farm-style of hospitality and overnight accommodation, offers a stopping place and base for the numerous users and hikers who pass through to see the sights of the Canin Massif.
