Back to the map
Casera Canin (1,443 m) stands on a grassy plateau at the foot of the south-western slope of the mountain of the same name, representing one of the highest mountain pastures in the entire region. This alpine pasture, in use until the early 1950s, consisted of a shelter for shepherds and a few cattlesheds, of which only the foundations remain. Now reduced to ruins, the refuge is at the centre of a restoration project by the Park authority and will be used as a natural observatory from 2003.
Marmots, which are already present in other parts of the protected area, have been reintroduced to the abundant alpine meadows which are interspersed with the rocky areas, boulders and scree characteristic of the pastures around the refuge.
The refuge can be reached from Casera Coot, crossing the village of Berdo di Sopra, and from Coritis (CAI – Italian Alpine Club – trail no. 642).
From the slope that rises to the east of the refuge, there is a now almost abandoned track which leads to the summit of Mount Canin.
